Constipation is defined as either a decrease in frequency of bowel movements or painful passage of bowel movements. When children are constipated for a long time, they may begin to soil their underwear. Constipation is common in children of all ages, especially during toilet training and school years. Some children may be constipated even when they have daily bowel movements if they’re not evacuating effectively.

Dietary tips to help constipation:

  • Add the following to your diet: pears, peaches, kiwi, powdered flax seed (can be added to oatmeal, smoothie, pancake batter, muffin batter), metamucil powder, metamucil crackers, fiber one bread.
  • Reduce processed food! Try whole grain bread (Ezekiel, sprouted wheat bread), avoid processed snacks- try fruits, dates, nuts, vegetables with dip for snacks instead.
